Business Solent Conference – Southampton City Master Plan – 16th March 2012

March 22nd, 2012

The Southampton City Master Plan has anyone within construction and property development talking after last Fridays resoundingly successful event organised by Business Solent in conjunction with the  Southampton City Council and Capita.

The conference was the official launch of the City’s Master Plan which looks to help generate up to 24,000 new jobs and £3bn of investment over the next 20 years and ‘create a city centre that enhances Southampton as a great place to do business, visit and live’.

All of the speakers provided enthralling insight into the Masterplan and the concepts and ideas that has driven the creation of the plan forward. By providing such insight into their areas of expertise, the bigger picture of what would be created, should the Masterplan be fully implemented, was realised to the audience. This included keynote speaker Theo Paphitis, retail expert and Dragon’s Den ‘Dragon’ ,who explained his thoughts on what such a redevelopment of one of his favourite cities would do for its retail and overall economy.

The Key projects comprising the Masterplan include:

- Station Quarter and Western Gateway;

- Royal Pier Waterfront;

- Itchen Riverside including Town Depot;

- Heart of the City;

- Fruit and Vegetable Market;

- Cultural Quarter;

- Southampton Solent University.

We at Evolution5 are fully supportive of the Masterplan and the regeneration of the City of Southampton and eagerly await further development of the Masterplans implementation. This will surely mean great things and times to come for the City and put Southampton deservedly up there with the world’s most prestigious cities!

RICS matrics Tenpin Bowling Event with Portsmouth University Students – Thursday 15th March

March 22nd, 2012

A visit to Portsmouth University to speak to second and third year students in the School of Civil Engineering and Surveying is always a pleasure, especially as last Thursday we had a couple of games of 10-pin bowling to finish off – http://www.port.ac.uk/ As a Chartered Surveyor and a local employer I have been visiting Portsmouth for a number of years, on trips organised by the RICS matrics for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight – http://www.rics.org/matrics

We either give a 10 minute presentation on ourselves as surveyors, how we became qualified or a ‘day in life of a surveyor’ etc or as last night we do more of a one to one with the students, offering advice on CVs, work placements and the like. Talking to them about the pressures of exams and then finding a job (any job) in today’s market makes me realise that I’m glad I have been through that process.

Fairly consistent advice to the students, not just from myself but the other employers was the importance of setting yourself apart from every other job seeker in an already over-burdened job market. This doesn’t just apply to graduates but to all of us regardless of situation or station, but it does become fundamental to those just about to embark on a career path. This is why work experience/work placements can make all the difference.

Last year, Evolution5 took on 2 work experience trainees who made the effort to contact us. Craig came from Solent University and impressed us enough that we offered him a position as an Assistant Project Manager. Alex was with us for a couple of weeks, then came to work with myself for a week on a project in London for a large construction consultancy and used that time to persuade them to take him on for the whole summer on their work experience scheme (and was paid for it as well). Alex is now in his last year at Portsmouth and hopeful of returning to that company as part of their next graduate intake.

It is usually true that if you make an effort, quite often you are rewarded, this is certainly the case for Craig and Alex. It is our intention to take on at least one more work experience trainee for the summer, workloads allowing, it is something that we have found works for us and the trainees. We all have to start somewhere.
